This beautiful dog is UKC Ch Hickory Tavern Finally Friday CM. "Alainn" is one of the Claire kids from her litter sired by Quaciendas Thunus Georgii. Alainn earned her Certificate of Merit this past weekend, becoming the 9th Barbet and the 4th Hickory Tavern Barbet to earn the CM title! Alainn is owned by Lynn Vogt-Kinsey and Leslie Woodward and is shown by Leslie. They have done a beautiful job raising Alainn into a wonderful show dog and super fun pet!

Congratulations to New Canadian Champion Beau!!
Can Ch Hickory Tavern Fool For Brookberry
'Beau' is co-owned with Donna and Stephanie Forte and is handled by Stephanie
We are so excited about this young dog. He will be shown in the US while he works on his Certificate of Merit. He will also be siring his first litters this year. Beau is OFA Good Hips, Normal Elbows, Normal Thyroid, Normal Cardiac, and Normal Eyes. He also has a super fun and goofy personality. Beau is a beautiful moving dog with an outstanding front assembly. He reminds me so much of his Dutch mother, Nessa. Donna and Stephanie are doing a fabulous job with their first Barbet!

Busy Weekend
We had a busy weekend around the farm and some of our dogs were out competing with great results!
Fia (Hickory Tavern Final Grade RN CGC) earned two legs toward her AKC Coursing Aptitude title at her first events! Fia is so naturally keen to the lure. What fun to see her enjoying the chase! Thanks to the Tena Family for always giving Fia such great opportunities.
Hickory Tavern Secret Garden, Meg, went to Canada and won a Group 3 from the classes over Specials with Leslie Woodward.
Our first puppy went home yesterday. Hickory Tavern Wishbone, Almonzo, has gone to Boston where he will assume the role of Top Dog.
Finally, my son Sam made me this fantastic sign for my birthday. His machining skills are pretty amazing!

Barbet Art for the Barbet Club of America
My good friend Leslie Woodward created these three images for our AKC/Westminster Meet the Breeds booth this year. I think you'll agree they are spectacular! We are excited for these beautiful posters to grace our breed booth and, after Meet the Breeds wraps up, these images will be available as prints, notecards, mugs, and other items as fundraisers for the Barbet Club of America. The online store for these images is CafePress/Barbet

Ren Best Puppy at Barbet Fanciers Specialty Show!
Congratulations to Leslie Woodward, Lynn Vogt-Kinsey, Mary McEneany & Michele DeTour for their BPISS win at the Barbet Fanciers of Ontario specialty show last weekend. Ren is beautifully prepared and shown by Leslie. She is from our Nessa-Murdoch litter and is already halfway to her Canadian championship! We are really proud of this puppy consistently winning in large entries.

Practicing with my Barbet Junior Handler
Fia is one of our puppies from this spring's Claire x Thunus litter and her 11 year old owner, Kate, has been working very hard learning how to handle her for conformation competition. We've been meeting up at South Park, and Kate works with her own puppy as well as Solene. It's a lot easier for Kate to concentrate on learning when working with a settled, mature dog. This helps her understand what Fia needs to be able to eventually do. For now, we are happy with a little less attention from Fia and are having fun. Kate is a model student!

Barbet Puppy Kit at 6 Months
Isabel was home this weekend from NYU and she helped me get some new photos of our puppy Kit. She is a beautiful combination of the best parts of her mom Nessa and her father Murdoch. We are so pleased with this entire litter and we have so much to look forward to in the future. Several of these puppies are in show homes and are off to promising starts. Best of all, they are fun and silly pups who are a joy to live with.

The Search For The Perfect Barbet Puppy
The first in a four-part series written by guest poster FLA, the owner of a 6 month old Barbet puppy
The Quest Begins: Finding
the Right Puppy Is Not Easy
Not too long ago, I was the typical inexperienced puppy
buyer. We wanted a pup with the qualities we loved most in our last dog, a
joyful rescue with a calm temperament who enjoyed our active lifestyle. Finding one would be easy, or so we thought
at first.
Once our intention of launching a puppy search was made
known to friends, the advice came pouring in.
‘Go to the shelter and just pick
one.’
‘There are great puppy finder sites
online. You can get a good dog a lot
cheaper there.’
‘My friend knows someone whose dog
had puppies. Want me to ask her?’
‘Don’t spend too much, that would
be crazy.’
‘Get a doodle.’
And on, and on.
Everyone had an opinion, but the variety of advice left my head
spinning. So we launched our own search.
Weeks were spent visiting shelters in person and on their
websites, checking in daily for just the right match. For many reasons, we began to understand that
what we were looking for was not likely to be found there.
Our next step was to run online searches for puppies. The results were shocking. Pretty pictures and cheap prices were hiding
an industry I soon realized we needed to stay far, far away from. Deeper digging revealed pictures and
information that I wish I could forget, but cannot.
Next, I listened to the voice of popular opinion that
labradoodles are the way to go. Finding
one was easy. Sifting through all of the
information was not. The more I read,
the more disheartened I became. A
discussion about why I did not get a labradoodle is a long and detailed story
though, and too far off topic for this post.
I slowly began to realize that if we wanted a quality puppy,
we had to look for the people and not
the dog.

American Barbet Weekend at the Canadian Dog Shows
Last weekend, we loaded up the RV and headed just over the Canadian border to Welland, Ontario where we met up with other Barbet from Wisconsin, New Jersey, Vermont, and Ontario. The weather ranged from sunny and beautiful to crazy winds and rain. We were thrilled with the results of our girls at the show.
Kit, Hickory Tavern Fool For Paris, is 6 months and one week old. She won Winners Bitch 3 of 4 days and earned 6 points towards her Canadian Championship. She loves to show and makes the judges smile!
Marlee, GrCh Hickory Tavern Secret Entourage, earned her Grand Championship title. In just 9 shows, Marlee completed these title requirements and becomes the first American bred Barbet to be a Grand Champion with the CKC. There are just a handful of Grand Champions in the CKC (her father being one of them) and we are very proud of our sweet girl!
We are super proud to have bred these girls!

Barbet Kit's First Haircut
We've had a super busy month and haven't been posting much, but now we're back to the dogs and getting ready for the fall shows. Kit is now 5 months old and I just gave her her first haircut. Taking off some of those puppy ends makes her coat look so much better. She's growing up so nicely!

Canadian Dog Show Fun with Barbets
We are home from an amazingly wonderful week in Canada with a new Champion, a puppy group winner, and a third within a few points of her Grand Championship!
We showed Solene 6 times this week with her being awarded Winners Bitch 5 times to complete her Canadian championship entirely from the Bred By Exhibitor class. Her daughter Marlee won 6 Best of Breeds and 1 Best Opposite at the Dogs of France specialty in Caledonia. She also earned 15 points toward her Grand Championship. I'm so proud of my girls!
Puppy Kit went along and we showed her in the Baby Puppy classes where she surprised us with 3 Best Baby Puppy in Sporting Group wins! She barely knows how to walk on a lead, but she sure figured out how to go around the show ring with authority!

While we have been busy raising our recent Barbet litters, Marlee has been in Nova Scotia with professional handler Allison Foley earning her Canadian championship! Big thanks to Allison and Todd for treating Marlee so well and giving her a good introduction to the dog show world. We are excited to get her home and hit some US dog shows.

Barbet Kit
One of the reasons we can let our puppies go to their new homes is because we also get a new puppy! Our keeper is this girl, the green collared girl of Nessa with the white front paw. She was my initial favorite of the litter, but I'm not sure that I love how this white foot will look in the ring. For quite a while, I thought I'd keep a different pup, but this one kept catching my eye, over and over, until it finally hit me that this girl needs to stay, even with her uneven markings. Her broad head and muzzle are things I was trying to improve from Nessa, and her fearless attitude around the farm makes her a favorite. We named her Kit because the two white footed puppies were often referred to as "the kitty feet" pups, so she got called 'Kitty' a lot! We've shortened it to 'Kit' and we are super happy to have her with us.

Nessa's Pups Start to Leave the Nest
Three of Nessa's girls headed off to their new homes today. Always such a bittersweet time; it's hard parting with the pups who have been such a focus of our lives for months. From planning the combinations to traveling for the breedings, confirming pregnancy, whelping and raising the babies...I've barely left the house for the past 9 weeks, but the wonderful pet families who share our pups make it possible for us to raise the quality dogs that we love. We wish nothing but happiness to the pups and their new families.

With the pups growing and the beautiful weather, I am having a hard time keeping this blog updated. 15 Barbet puppies keep me busy! Our routine has been a changing one as the puppies have gotten more active and independent. Instead of letting them all run around the yard at one time, I now find that it is best to take them in groups of 3 or 4 on our walks to the creek or through the yards. I try to do something new with them every day, and today's fun included a wild game of chase through the branches that I trimmed from the maple trees. There is also a 24 x 24 covered run set up for them, and they are able to spend hours outside running and racing. Some of their outside time is spent with all of them together, and other times they are separated into their own litters. We had a lot of puppy families visit this weekend, and I just cannot believe that next weekend will have the first of Nessa's pups already leaving here. This time has really flown!
